My Investment Areas of Focus
A few friends have asked me recently what I focus on investing in so I figured I'd write about here to share it publicly for anyone interested. Over the years, this has changed as I diversified my investments across multiple areas. The theme of my current focus revolves around two core principles, primarily control and liquidity.
In general, I find that having control is important to me and access to liquidity is something I put emphasis on that others may not care as much. Of course there are exceptions to these but most of my current focus will resolve around these. So without further ado, here's my current areas of focus.
Businesses and Assets
This is the primary area I try to focus on. Long term I want this to make up 40% of my investments. This doesn't mean simply re-investing in my business but rather a focus on acquiring new businesses and assets. I run a Startup Studio and Investment Company so it makes sense that this be a major area of focus for me.
Real Estate
I don't have any strong desire to build an entire real estate empire but I do want to expand my portfolio of real estate properties. Long term I want this to make up 30% of my investments. Real estate is an area most people choose to invest in so this shouldn't be all that surprising.
Stocks and Crypto
Stocks, options, ETFs, etc... and various investments in the crypto space including coins, tokens, NFTs, etc... is a continued area of interest. Long term I want this to make up 20% of my portfolio.
Private Equity
This is the one exception on the list where you have very little control and generally a lack of liquidity but it's an area of great interest so I intend to continue investing in this. This will make up the remaining 10% of my focus.
Other Investments and Exceptions
As a rule of thumb, I don't like absolutes. Of course if something comes up that is interesting to me or something I consider a great opportunity, I'll consider investing in it even if it doesn't fit the focus areas above. However, I've invested in a lot of other areas including various assets, fractional shares in physical and digital goods, collectibles, domaining, etc... And I've come to realize that they're just not areas I have a strong interest in long term or want to continue investing in. And while I'll continue to buy great domains, I don't plan on becoming a domainer. I believe to do anything well, relentless focus on a few things is better than spreading yourself too thin.
